Atomica by Carnivius Atomica by Carnivius
- Will need to click full view or Download if the piece has been shrunken a bit and distorted by DA's default size -

Commission work done at end of 2010 for [link] for his album Atomica and requested a 16 bit style video game album cover and inlay art.

This shows the cover in the top left corner, the ingame shot in the top right (with hexagon border to make CD case square sized), the track listing on the bottom left (which was the order at time of commission, it may have changed since then), and he asked for a logo of Volt 9000 abbreviated to V9K done in the same font style as the Atomica logo for his website which is in the bottom right along with my 'tag'.

I used a 16 color palette for all pieces of this commission project. Just for practising color efficiency rather than any official rule. There is a 17th color but that is merely the transparent color used to seperate the 4 images.

Cover image can be viewed on it's own at [link]
Ingame shot can be viewed on it's own at [link]

Atomica by *Carnivius is not only wonderful pixel art in it's own right, but is also a brilliant CD cover design showing that pixels can be practical as well as aesthetically pleasing. ( Featured by ClefairyKid )

Yeah, sorry it's just album art commissioned by a musician for his album.  Info is in the info section. =p

Heh. Thanks.  Was just about coming up with a flexible 16 colour palette suitable for what this piece required.

It definitely has a look I really like to it. I might direct my artist towards this to use this color scheme for one of our tile sets.
It has a very unique look to it that could work for our "titanium" tileset/material in our game.

Thank you. That was inspired by the big bold logos of the 80's games, movies and record album sleeves. RoboCop comes to mind which also influenced the character somewhat too.

This is REALLY cool. Why an in-game shot if it's not an actual game though? XD If this were a real game, I would probably play it. Really creative style, really creative with the track listings there (for a moment I seriously thought they were score listings), and I really like how Atomica is highlighted on the track listings. I am curious though, why is your tag "Carnivac" if your name is Carnivius? XD Seriously though, I love this. What program did you use to make this?

Because without an in-game shot you wouldn't think it was a real game even though it's not (which was the point of the CD art, really) and I enjoyed doing it.

And I'm glad you got the idea behind the track listing resembling a high score list. :)

Carnivac has my usual graphic artist name for years (inspired by the old G1 Transformer that appeared in stories that inspired me to draw as a kid) but it's already taken on DA so I chose one close enough (which is also part of my PlayStation Network name) so it works for me.

Okay, that's cool! If you ever learn how to make actual games, it would be cool if you turned this idea into a game with the soundtrack you made it for as its actual soundtrack. XD And again, what program did you use to make this?

I used Paint Shop Pro 7 (from the year 2000 cos it got too much like Photoshop after that one) which is my main program for general graphic work and I use Pro Motion for spriting, tiling and animation.

And I didn't make any soundtrack. I'm not a musician. It was the musician who hired me to do his album cover a couple years ago.

I know that, but I am saying that someday you should ask his permission and if he says yes then you should make this game real and give it the same soundtrack. And I am wondering exactly how pixelart is done in those programs, since I have been hoping to find a program that allows me to actually place each pixel like I can with a graphing calculator instead of having to worry about measurements and stuff to place the little squares right.

measurements and stuff? I don't really understand what you mean. Have you got MS Paint on your computer or something similar? It's not a great program but it's a start for a lot of pixel artists these days before they move on to something with more features and more efficiency.

And I don't know if that album's soundtrack would suit this game if it was actually made. It's sort of electronic but not very much like the kind of soundtrack you may expect or want from a 16 bit platform shooter. I would personally go for something that sounds somewhat like the soundtrack from Turrican II on the Amiga cos that for me is one of the most perfect game soundtracks ever created and the definition of epic spacey action game music. =)

I have Photoshop, but I think that's it right now. By measurements, I mean trying to use a square "paintbrush" to place each square without overlapping or creating gaps. XD

Without overlapping or creating gaps? What exactly are you doing? I just zoom in a pixel. And just scale the final image up if it looks a bit small and you want to 'simulate' an old resolution on your current machine.

I'm sure if it were to get enough attention, some indie developer may be interested in it lol. But I guess they would need to get the rights from V9K or you for that to work.

Maybe. I would rather do it myself but it's just finding the time. It's a huge amount of work to make a full game of this genre.
